Why I decided to go natural and my one year transitioning time
I was natural until I went to the university. Then, I relaxed my hair and keep doing it until recently because I found it easier to manage.
It all started when I was taking care of my daughter's hair and I didn't really know what to do.
She didn't have a routine and neither did I. I just knew I wanted things to be different for her.
I wanted her to be proud of her natural hair and not ask me for a perm because I wasn't satisfied with my relaxed hair either apart from its "easiest manageability". Besides, I really wanted her to stay away as much as possible from those chemicals.
My daughter started feeling a little bit uncomfortable with her hair. So I thought I should find a good routine and beautiful styles for her hair because I was barely doing anything but washing, putting some oil or pomade and doing some quick style. Moreover, I was using too much heat on her hair for stretching it.
Therefore, almost one year ago, I started searching information about natural hair care for my daughter and then I got it (like a spark) : How could my daughter be confident with her natural hair when I am relaxed? Isn't there a saying like you preach better by examples? That was it, I decided to go natural and have a healthy hair care routine as well.
I didn't want to go bald or start with a hair length too short. So I decided to transition for one year so that I would be able to have enough hair at least to braid my hair up and do some short styles.
My transitioning hairstyles were : box braids, cornrows, african threading and wigs. Handling two different textures ain't no joke! I had to cut half of my relaxed ends to feel more comfortable to manage my hair with less tangles and breakage.
Needless to say that my relaxed hair was a mess. It was way too much breaking off and thining after years of regular perm. I remember that I had a head full of hair, at least people always told me that. I long for my natural hair back! I can't remember that much thing about it! It is almost like I have to rediscover my hair all again. Moreover, I didn't have a particular hair routine when I was younger and natural either. I was just washing my hair, putting some oil or pomade on it and braiding it up back or doing some bun if I didn't have time to braid my hair. Nothing fancy as you can guess. My hair length was, I would say, armpit length when stretched.
My last relaxer was in august 2018, so it is almost a year now. My new growth is there! My big chop is coming shortly with my length check! I can't wait! I will let you know as soon as it is done.
