Looking for balance between moisture and protein
The health of your hair depends on the balance between moisture and protein. Hair is made of proteins (amino acids) called keratin.
Here are some signs that your hair needs more moisture :
1. Your hair has low porosity
2. Your hair takes time to air dry
3. Your hair is dry
4. Your hair is crunchy or stiff
Here are some signs that your hair is crying out for a protein treatment :
1. Your hair has high porosity
2. Your hair air dries very quickly
3. Your hair has lost its elasticity: Is your hair hard to curl or even losing its natural curl?
4. Your hair is Limp or Stringy. Hair that is limp (without energy) or flat (dull) is a definite sign that your hair needs a protein treatment.
5. Your hair feels Gummy or Sticky. This can happen if your hair is chemically processed too frequently or your hair has suffered an excessive amount of damage or suffers of moisture overload (hygral fatigue)
6. You’ve recently colored your hair or applied any other chemical treatments
Note - However, be sure to stay away from products that can add too much protein to the strands.
This usually happens if protein-based products (shampoo, conditioner, ...) are used too often or over-deposit protein into the hair. To keep your strands strong and healthy without feeling crunchy or stiff you should figure out how often your hair needs an extra protein boost and from which products.
Hence, to figure out your moisture-protein balance, the first step should be to figure out your porosity which is your hair ability to absorb and retain products. Also remember that porosity is more like a spectrum of values, thereby you have to assess your own porosity level.
1. Your hair porosity is normal. You can use only mild protein treatments, which is the case for most protein treatments of the market (treatments with ingredients like "hydrolyzed protein", amino acids, collagen, keratin) because they already have a good moisture-protein balance.
2. Your hair is low porosity. Your hair needs more moisture. Your hair normally doesn't need strong protein treatments unless your are experiencing moisture-overload or chemical treatments. So start by alternating 1 mild protein treatment for 1 moisturizing treatment and eventually increase the number of moisturizing treatments before the mild protein treatment if needed.
3. Your hair is high porosity. Your hair needs strong protein treatments. So start by alternating 1 strong protein treatment for 1 mild protein treatment and increase the number of mild/strong protein treatments in-between strong/mild protein treatments if needed.
